My comments on tutoring Drama : I have been a theater artist all of my adult life. I can coach acting, tutor folks learning lines, or help a college student non major understand and know theater history.

I assess the student's level of mastery by listening to parents, communicating with the student (in whatever appropriate way needed) and then doing some basic testing. Once the student is assessed, I design a learning environment and activities that coincide with the student's specific strengths, while adding some elements of challenge. I tend to work in a very focused way for 10-15 minutes, and then add in tactile activities (like Bannana Grams for example) for 10 minutes or so, in order to maintain the student's attention. Children and youth who are struggling to read and write get patient assistance to learn the words correctly. My work will improve writing techniques (including essays and basic writing skills), reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and literary creativity. For younger children I work with acquiring reading skills, word recognition, pattern recognition, spel ... read more

Part-time College Student Tutor for Mandarin and Math

I've been teaching my two younger sisters and helping them with their work since I went to school. I've tutored Mandarin and Math to other students for about six months already. So far, it has been a great experience for me and I would like to do more teaching and help students out while earning an extra income.

Drama is one of my top subjects! Extensive experience as teacher, actor, director, and writer with success on both coasts in public and private venues. Focus is on personal development in artistic and professional efforts.

I'm a fairly intense and mellow person. Focus on specifics comes from an understanding of the goals and overall needs of a given project. Who's my audience and what details do I need to gather to make my point or reveal my position? I prefer leading students to answers using questioning and on-your-feet-experience.
I have over thirty years experience teaching Theatre and Language Arts for public and private educational and performance organizations, including elementary school through junior college classes, and a mime/movement class at Yale University. I have studied at UCLA, San Francisco State University, the Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven CT, and the New School for Social Research in New York City. I've also participated in workshops and performance opportunities with trainers in the styles of Bolivia's Augusto Boal, Sanford Meisner, and the San Francisco Shake ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

"A teacher is one who makes himself progressively unnecessary" I think that this quote about teaching, in a way, reflects my idea on what teaching is all about. One can be a good teacher, whose characteristics encompass good knowledge of the subject matter, understanding the needs of your students, and the ability to apply this knowledge to students' needs. However, an effective teacher does not only pass knowledge on to her students, but makes herself gradually unnecessary: her learners become independent learners as they progress through a course. As a teacher, I always try to be effective in this sense - I foster independence in my students. At the same time, I strive for excellence which will eventually make me a better teacher. This endeavor caused me to reflect on how an excellent teacher is different from a good teacher. The conclusion I have come to is that a gap between a go ... read more

I have experience working with k-12. Along with employed tutoring, volunteering, and mentoring. I am qualified to tutor in English, math, and social studies because throughout my studies I have excelled in all three subjects and have tutored them also. I enjoy tutoring math because I get to constantly push the limits of how I can explain concepts. In English, I read lots off long books. And social studies, for the same reason as English, I enjoy reading books! currently for the wccsd, i tutor in math and science. i have guest spoken at a school for science and i have lead the discussion at the same school in math, grades 2-5. i am currently getting the substitute teaching credentials for the school district.

I have enjoyed teaching and tutoring a wide range of students in a vast array of different settings. Most recently, I have tutored reading to 4th graders at an elementary school, taught ESL and GED subjects to adults through an adult education center, and taught creative writing to 5th-8th graders at a summer camp. I have also tutored Japanese-speaking businessmen in English as well as American culture, and tutored a family from Hong-Kong in English communication, writing, and college preparation. I am also a former professional clown and have over 13 years experience working closely with children. Indeed, I also have my own thriving 9 and 12 year old children who lovingly call me "English Teacher" when they want help with their Language Arts and Social Studies homework.
My "teaching style" changes depending on the needs of my students. In all cases, an initial assessment of b ... read more

When you meet me in person you will immediately feel that I am someone who relates well with children and teens. I get to know students on a personal level and find out their learning style and modes of learning. I also assess their current skill level and knowledge of the subject so that I know where from where to start. There are often "holes" of information that are missing from students that can cause increasing problems as lessons build upon knowledge previously learned. Tutoring helps to fill those holes and to help kids find success! I am exceedingly patient, flexible and am very professional. I truly care about each success and frustration in my students and I believe in kids when everyone else has given up on them.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have over twenty years of experience teaching reading. I completed all of the Houghton/Mifflin Language Arts training sessions that taught California teachers how to be expert Language Arts teachers. I have also attended many Language Arts training sessions through my school district and county education offices. I also ran Language Arts and ESL Intervention programs at my school. I have a B.S. and a Master's degree in Education, and I am CLAD Certified. I love teaching and get along very well with children. I respect them and I know how to inspire them to do their best work.
I believe in "Assertive Discipline". This style uses lots of verbal praise, rewards and incentives. It keeps learning on a positive, moving forward track. This style of teaching is never negative. It encourages learning through engaging, age-appropriate, research-based, fun activities. It starts by assessing ... read more

My passion is helping students achieve their highest individual potential in school. I believe if every student were given and Individualized Education Program, our students would accomplish much more in school. I believe when learning is fun, students accomplish more. I spend a little more time on the front end finding out what a student enjoys outside of the classroom to make learning relevant and FUN! I believe every student can learn and every student deserves a chance.
As an entrepreneur and lover of the arts, I am passionate about helping students learn using their natural gifts and talents. I believe anyone can teach a subject, having enough knowledge of a subject allows one to pass it on. However, I feel what many teachers do not do is teach students how to learn. It is in my belief that teaching students to learn enables them to think independently allowing them to become more creative rather than repetitive. So not only do I teach students the subject, I teach them how to learn and apply it to every other subject.
As a accomplished student, I realized I always had help along the help with achieving academic success. From teachers and counselors to my peers and older students. I began to help other with academics as early as the third grade, however I began to commit to tutoring in High School and continue it through-out college, in hopes to eventually becoming a teacher in the future.

I feel an awe-inspiring sense of wonder when I see that children fully understand what they have learned. Nowadays, there is an abundant amount of underprivileged children, who need the extra care, since being in a classroom or at home may not give the child enough attention and aid. Therefore, I want to be able to help as much as I can by not only being a role model, but reassuring that they "can do it" and go far in life. A child has the capability to absorb like a sponge and make room for growth; not only academically but socially, spiritually, and psychologically. Nevertheless, a well-rounded tutor is authoritative and professional, with a sense of humor. I believe students will successfully learn and be motivated in a safe and friendly environment; thus, achieving higher test scores.
