Deep understanding of math concepts

I am a math PhD student at Michigan State University with experience of teaching Calculus for 8 consecutive semester. Before that, back in my home, I have been teaching Algebra, Geometry and Discrete Math to high school students for more than 6 years. I have also several years of experience in teaching math preparation courses for student mathematics olympiads to smart and talented students.
I usually start a topic by proposing a problem and making the student minds to think and naturally bringing up the concepts in the topic. Then I elaborate to explain the topic, usually drawing graphs, diagrams, etc. if necessary. To learn a specific skill, for example in Algebra or Calculus, I usually apply and explain the procedure for a few simple example and then explain the technique as a general procedure.

Whenever I begin working with a student, I assess their skills and identify the areas of concern. Are they lacking the prerequisite skills for a class they are struggling with? Are they struggling because they need more repetition and review, or because they lack organizational skills? Identifying the area of weakness makes it possible for me to individualize my tutoring to meet a student’s learning styles and needs. My goal in tutoring is not only to target the areas of weakness to allow a student to succeed, but also to help them become more aware of their areas of weakness and strengths. Tutoring should not only help students master the material in their current classes, but also help students develop effective study strategies and problem solving skills that will allow them to complete their work independently, when their tutor isn't there and succeed in both current and future c ... read more

I believe that many students do not know how to study, and are unsure of where to begin. This is especially true for students entering college, or high school, who never really had to study before. As a tutor, it is my job to help the student break down the material into manageable parts and teach them to identify what is important, and how to get organized. The role of a tutor is to not give you the answers, but to help you get the answers on your own. I can show you how to problem solve, and help with test stress. I am available most evenings, and anytime on the weekends. I am also a member of the International Tutoring Association, and feel free to view my profile on LinkedIn at: http://www.linkedin.com/in/margaretholda

I love working with students and enjoy seeing them be successful. I understand that all minds process information differently and enjoy incorporating a variety of teaching tools and techniques in my lessons in order to reach all students. I am not afraid to use technology and hands-on learning in order to get a point across and help a student better understand the objective of a lesson. Working individually with a student to get a grasp of their thought process helps me to coordinate my lessons to fit their individual learning style.
Over the past four years I have taught a variety of science courses, including biology, AP biology, chemistry, AP chemistry, advanced science middle school elective and a biology methods course at Eastern Michigan University. This vast array of classes has given me an opportunity to work with students from grade seven up through the college level. ... read more

My career as an educator began when I started tutoring during high school. At a tutoring agency, I provided personal and small group tutoring for children ages 4-15 in math and reading. When I decided to pursue a degree in education, I gained experience by volunteering at summer school programs. I worked with diverse groups of children in first and fourth grade, in all subject areas. While completing my education courses, I student taught in suburban and semi-urban schools. Through my experiences, I learned how to approach one subject from many different angles in order to best suit the learner. I taught kindergarten, second and third grade in all subject areas. Within my elementary education degree, I specialized in mathematics and social studies, and thus have a strong understanding of teaching concepts in both areas. I'm also certified to teach math and social studies at the middle ... read more

Although a senior about 20 credits from my BS, I know I am qualified for this job. My passion for Chemistry rubs off on those around me. With a near 4.0 GPA, I always earn the top score in my class, only once did I get less than perfect on a Science test, a 99%. Students began asking for help. From my first Science course, I helped many students drastically improve their grades. Professors gave my name out to students and I have taught many each term. When my Prof. was going to miss class she asked me to teach instead. My lab reports were always perfect; the Prof. copied them for future classes. I earned the only student research grant. Researching a method to detect pathogen DNA; my work continues to be published.
I wanted to excite others as Chemistry had excited me. I teach the material and why it is so exciting. My style adapts to that specific student’s strengths, weaknes ... read more

I attempt to determine the best way to provide the information based on the manner in which you want to learn it. If you want multiple examples, I can provide them for you; if you want to be walked through the theoretical background and not have numerous problems, I can do that as well. I want to provide the information in the way easiest for you to learn it, rather than teaching you in a standard way.
I have earned my bachelors and master of science degree in Biostatistics, and recently completed my PhD in Epidemiology, a field that is heavily reliant on statistical methods. Statistics is theoretically based on mathematics, which has therefore been a strong component of my education. Since high school, I have tutored students in elementary, middle, and high school, as well as community college, undergraduates and graduate students. I believe that every child can succeed in education. It is just a matter of finding the correct learning style for that person. This is based on my experience in education over the past 30 years. I have taught in colleges, corporations and K-12. In each of these arenas, I have found that knowing the student and the way they learn is probably the most important aspect of imparting knowledge. Therefore, my teaching style would vary considerably depending on the learning style of the person. I am patient and creative with a love of life-long learning. It is my goal in education to impart on students that love of learning.

I have worked in education at the community college level for several years. I worked as an English Tutor for four years at Washtenaw Community College before being asked to join the part-time teaching staff. My class load consisted mostly of Composition I and Technical Writing classes; occasionally I would substitute for Literature courses when needed. In addition to my educational experience, I also have corporate experience working as a Technical Writer/Documentation Specialist in companies such as: EDS, GM, and Consumer Energy.
I can’t imagine myself not spending the rest of my life teaching. I have worked both in the educational field and the corporate world and without a doubt I know with whom my heart belongs. I am currently a writing tutor and learning coordinator at the University of Michigan. I help to insure that student athletes receive a fair education while they are on scholarship. I tutor them on a weekly basis in most subjects but I focus primarily on writing and English. I am a very effective writing tutor both for grammar checking, composition, and essay writing. I have a BA in business management from Michigan State University, so I am very proficient in Econ, Math, computer skills and most business oriented courses.
