A few months after receiving my BA and Teaching Certificate, I began teaching preschool again and have substituted middle school some as well. Students come with various background and motivation levels and ways of learning. A tutor needs to be able to discover within the student the best way for that student to learn. I believe students should be pressed not to memorize facts but to use critical thinking skills, tying things together and seeing relations so a multitude of similar problems can be solved.
