II believe that writing is a craft that anyone can learn--anad that the craft can be found in revisison: in re-shaping draft after draft. I also believe that most people are smart. i've had high school students who read at a 3rd grade level--but they were smart when addressing subjects of interest to them. I teach by starting with the familiar--what students understand--and then buiding on it. In teachiing high school in East L.A., I would ask students to write about literature, say Wuthering Heights, starting with what themes were familiar. It turned out that Wuthering Heights became popular in East L.A., and my identified with some of the British characters. I have raised and tutored two children and two grand children. In the early seventies I was a tutor for a Canadian third grader through Operation Share at Mesa Community College San Diego Ca where I was studying elementary education. From 1985 through 1987 I worked at a domestic violence shelter often working with the children of abused women to help them stay current in school. Most were elementary school age. During that time I also volunteered for C.A.P.P (Child Assault Prevention Project) which taught elementary age children techniques avoid physical and sexual assault. I am currently enroled in a Teachers Assistant program through Alamanmce Comunity college. I taught pre-school to three year olds at Kiddie Kollege in Findlay Ohio from 1978-1981.

I earned two bachelor degrees from the University of North Carolina in December of 2007. From there, I chose to move to Massachusetts to participate in a ground breaking fellowship at MATCH Charter Public High School. I chose this alternate route to receiving teaching certification because of the classroom experience it provided me.
