Recently I retired from teaching Title I classes. Much of my work has been helping lower elementary students improve their reading skills, often in a 1:1 setting. Besides working with young students, I have worked as high as 8th grade. Usually I have assisted with reading, but I have also helped with math, too. Helping young children learn to read has been the most rewarding thing I have done. It is a joy to watch them catch on to new learning. I like working 1:1 or in small groups. Teaching is a wonderful experience! My teaching style is laid-back, I'd say. I like having conversations in order to determine how someone learns. I think people learn best when discussing the material and really think it out before they start creating something. Guiding a student down the path of their own learning style is important because they will need those skills in the future when they go off to college or start a career on their own.
