Even before attaining my degree in English from Jacksonville State University I was passionate about all forms of teaching. I have over a year of experience tutoring college students at Jacksonville State University's Academic Center for Excellence and immediately following that nearly another year of experience tutoring dyslexic youths at the Dyslexia Clinic in Oxford, AL. I try to put myself in the student's shoes and find which method of teaching can reach the student best. I try to identify the student's strengths and weaknesses and work out a program to help him or her achieve his or her goals. I also like to involve the parents or guardians as much as possible to keep them updated on the student's progress and how they can contribute to the learning process. A teacher must care about people. It is not enough to have the knowledge of the material. You must be very aware of body language and read the group to determine if you need to restate the concept. A good teacher will ask a question and will not answer until a group discussion occurs. A good teacher ensures the group feels comfortable to think outside the box withou fear of embarrassment. Use of several medias in addition to course material is key to keep the attention of the group. However, again, none of this is effective if you do not have a genuine desire to see the knowledge you have of the material transferred to the individuals receiving the message.
