A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching has been my last career change. My prior experience has been in the field of manufacturing, maintenance engineering services and construction management. This diversified background was instrumental in equipping me to acquire a technology education certificate in three states (NY, OH, NJ) I am equipped to tutor elementary students in math, the physical sciences and language arts. I am also certified to teach students in technology and special education.
My teaching style is customized to each student's needs. Because all students have different learning styles my instructions are patterned to maximize that student's particular style. After evaluating each student with a baseline test, goals and objectives based on the state's/district's curriculum are determined. The goal of my approach is to enable students to have a level of ownership in learning concepts and ideas. Merely teaching the idea is not enough, and that "Oh, I see" moment must occur to embed the idea for long-term growth. I enjoy relating the ideas and facts to real world examples that almost anyone can grasp.
For a period of five years, I offered tutoring services to students at the University of Chapel Hill, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. My ability comes from experience...I was not entirely prepared for college when I started, and had to work much harder to successfully complete my degrees. I believe that this has given me a great insight into what students really need, especially as schools continue to do a less than perfect job of preparing students for the future.
