A Little Bit About Me...

After receiving a PhD in chemistry from Purdue University I worked over 20 years in discovery research areas. I then turned to my calling of education and became a certified science teachers for grades 8-12. I taught middle school science for five years. I have since retired but love to stay connected to science and math education by tutoring. I have the gift of being able to take complex subject matter, make it easy to undersand and connect it to the real world.
Students come with various background and motivation levels and ways of learning. A tutor needs to be able to discover within the student the best way for that student to learn. I believe students should be pressed not to memorize facts but to use critical thinking skills, tying things together and seeing relations so a multitude of similar problems can be solved. I spent one year as a Headstart teacher. I have several years of substitute teaching experience working with different subjects and grades. I was a tutor throughout college. I just began tutoring again this year for CARE. I have recently tutored chemistry & biology.
I love working with kids. I try to make things as simple as I can in hopes that the student will understand it. I think it is important to praise kids ( ex. good job) to boost their self esteem. I enjoy learning, and I instill that passion into my students as best I can. I grew up with a mom who is an English teacher, so I have developed good communication skills and writing skills from her.
