Once in a classroom I realized that I was meant to teach. I love working with students who are challenging and those who challenge me. I believe that I can become a better teacher only by continually challenging myself and my students. The key phrase “engaging students” seems less than what is required in the classroom. I want my students to be engaged but I want them to encompass and enjoy what they are doing as well. • As a NESCAC undergraduate, I explored many areas of study. In addition to earning a BA in English and American Literature while completing a minor in African Studies, I also became fluent in French through study, travel, and teaching. My first teaching experiences were in high school, when I choreographed musicals and tutored a young Chinese boy in English. In college, I co-instructed a drum circle. I have 23 years as a public school teacher in Rochester, NY. I hold a MS in Education in Secondary Social Studies, and a BA in Communications/Journalism. I am very familiar with the New York State Education Department's requirements in the areas of Social Studies and English Language Arts. My grammar and organizational skills are very strong, and I am an excellent writer and editor. The majority of my teaching has been in the area of Secondary Social Studies.
I believe strongly that any student can be inspired to embrace learning. I have found that meeting students where they are at (academic level) is most crucial to inspiring learning. In additional, centering teaching around specific student needs is equally important. This is a challenge when students feel pressured to pass tests, but it can be done!
