A Little Bit About Me...

My formal teaching experience is limited to two years with seventh graders and high schoolers. When I pursed graduate work in cell biology, experiences with formal education were limited. However giving seminars and training technical staff was common and bears similarity to formal teaching. Tutoring is a happy mix between formal and informal teaching combining focused attention and designing specific tasks for student growth.
In a word, my teaching style is Socratic. Often that means I respond to a student’s question with a question that enables them to figure out answers for themselves. Other times, my questions are designed to stimulate ideas beyond the student’s view so they need to “stretch” a bit. I love the idea of being the person that has helped someone further their knowledge. As a Licensed School Pyschologist and parent of two school aged children, I have come to understand how people learn things. I have a strong background in reading and writing and was published when I was in college. I have worked for many years with students who struggle with writing, and feel I am very effective in helping them make the connections between reading and writing in a meaningful way.
