I have worked with a published poet with their drafts, helping fine tune their work. I completed 5 workshops in topics such as fragment writing, long poems & serials, fiction writing, and adapting mythology and fairy tales. I prefer working with African American children. I believe they are usually the most neglected children in the public school systems. I try to work as a mentor and guide children through projects and activties, rather than work as their "guru". I believe all children are gifted they just need the direction and encouragement to steer them through their experiences. I use child centered approaches to teaching by using hands-on activities and project based lessons.
After graduating from DePauw University, my first teaching experience was at Rose Elementary Open School, which is a Detroit Public School. I was a building substitute. From my time with English Club, I found there is very little advantage for either party when the teacher is draconian. Giving the student little rewards, plenty of encouragement, and being patient work much better. I like to try to understand the student on a personal level, so I can make him or her comfortable. Does the student prefer an informal session or to work hard the entire time? Will jokes encourage or distract? Questions like these are key to creating the best learning environment.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have privately tutored students that recently arrived from Japan in English with a focus on conversation to enable them to quickly feel comfortable in a new country. As they attained conversation skills I changed my focus to education based teaching with a focus on understanding the classroom teacher and being able to participate in the classroom discussion. I have a degree in English but I have completed through Calculus 2 and have taken Physics and Chemistry courses so I spread the focus of the lessons through different disciplines with the goal of facilitating classroom learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a foster parent, I tutored our first child as he progressed through kindergarten and the first grade. His previous school experience was lacking at best, and he had little confidence in his scholastic ability. I was able to pinpoint his natural aptitude--mathematics--and use it to help not only boost his self-esteem regarding academics, but also to tailor my approach to his other subjects as well. Since math is very much tied to logic, using logical constructs to aid him in his critical thinking proved fruitful in showing him how to solve problems regarding tasks such as alphabetization, grammar, and spelling, among others.
