I like to give a diagnostic test at the first meeting to assess the client's familiarity with the topic, then, customize lessons to fit her or his needs. I aim to build a strong foundation, then, increase difficulty of concepts as client's comfort level with the topic increases. I use materials that are challenging, but not intimidating. I adjust to the student/learner as I am told or discover their learning preferences. I believe that students must be active participants in the learning process, rather than passive observers. Students respond best to goals that are both challenging and achievable. Unclear or ambiguous assignments are even worse because the students are apt to waste their time solving the wrong problem (and justiably resent the poor marks they receive when they fail to correctly guess what problem they were supposed to solve). Learning what doesn't work is just as important as learning what does. Students must be encouraged to learn from their mistakes.
