A Little Bit About Me...

While I am still a university student, I have spent many countless hours studying German. I have studied it in an American classroom and a German classroom. I lived in Germany for 15 months, studying and living the language. I really love the German language and culture, and I'm really interested in helping others to love it as much as I do! Hopefully, my passion for it will transmit onto others who are interested in Germany as well.

Composition is one of my top subjects! I've written dozens of award-winning stories for various publications.

With a degree in English and 20 years in journalism, I have a thorough understanding of the principles required to read and write at a high level. I can teach a student how to write clearly, concisely and, if he/she has the desire, even compellingly. I can also help a student better comprehend what he/she reads and, moreover, appreciate and enjoy it.
Patient. Encouraging. Funny. I believe learning should be a joy, not a chore.

I'm patient. I'll try and make my lessons easy to understand. I know how frustrating language arts can be, but I also know how rewarding it can be as well. I can relate very easily to high school students, because I just graduated from high school 5 years ago.
I started tutoring in 2009 through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana. I tutor my "Little" for an hour once a week. I help with whatever subject they need. My specialty is Language Arts, but if you need help with basic math, I can do that too. I have observed many elementary, middle school, and high school classes. I know what works best, especially since I'm going to become a high school language arts teacher in a few years.

A Little Bit About Me...

Pick out what's good and encourage that. It is too easy to focus on the negative. As a writer who understands rejection very well, it has humbled me. Another set of eyes always helps during the editing process. Sometimes a writer just needs to be set on the correct path, and they can do much of the rest from there. Being a parent has also taught me patience, which is something any teacher needs. Also, reading helps you become a better writer. I think when I was younger I didn't want to hear that as much, but it's true.
While I have made a living as a technical writer in the software industry for sixteen years, part of making a life has been through my creative writing. I have written eighteen screenplays, three adult fiction manuscripts, three nonfiction manuscripts, two YA manuscripts, and now I hope to have found my niche as a middle grade novelist. As a first generation immigrant, I have sharply experienced just how important proper communication skills are. Language, spoken and written are one of the most important parts of building those skills for young people, for success in both carreer and social life. I strongly believe that my own experience with constant learning and improving my language abilities helps me in better understanding of the learning process of others. Multiple personality assesments as well as my self-evaluation state me as a leader type indiavidual, competitive, influential, however also supportive and attentive as well. As a non paid experience I have been the helping hand for my friends struggling with their paper, proof reading and restructuring their writting during both highschool and college. A Little Bit About Me...

Tutoring offered the unique opportunity of finding what works best for each student when it comes to studying a specific subject. Every student learns differently and as a tutor my first goal has always been to help the student find what his or her strengths are and used them to achieve his or her goals. I love tutoring young children, teenagers, and adults. Since the experience is different every time that challenges me to be studying constantly as well.

More About This Tutor...

The satisfaction that comes from working with a student, one on one, who is struggling, and seeing them change from angry and insecure to confident and proud is immense. I haven't found it anywhere else. As a teacher, my initial goal is to discover how to facilitate the individual learning styles of my students. I strive to instill a confidence that will lead to a willing and open mind conducive to further learning.
I have been a playwright for the last ten years, which is why I chose to get my BA in writing. Being involved in extensive reading and writing programs in and out of school has given me a deep appreciation for words. Over the course of my education, I was fortunate enough to tutor several young students struggling with reading and writing, as well as weekly creative writing workshops with elementary students.
