I recall teaching my children at a very early age the concept of ratios. I used windows, tiles from the kitchen, a pizza pie etc. This, before going to pencil and paper and it worked. As a Teaching Assistant I led a 50 minute recitation of the material, graded materials, and kept records for my 30 students.
