I believe that the best way for a tutor to assist the student is to adapt to the individual’s learning style. We all have different approaches to learning and identifying which method maximizing your understanding of the topic helps to not only gain insight into difficult concepts, but furthermore increases your interest in the subject being taught. My students often say I can’t be a teacher because they “just get it" when I explain. Even so, my degree is in math and I've taught professionally and privately. I have a history of maintaining high scores and would rather show why something works than how to follow steps. I don't expect students to love math or do it "my way" but I want students to know math isn't scary. To this end, I explain every step, do assessments to determine student needs and base instruction on student knowledge.
