Government is one of my top subjects! Certified teacher

I have a comprehensive background in the social studies having utilized all of my college elective courses to take social studies classes for my secondary social studies composite teaching certificate. I have a year of direct teaching experience of U.S. History and World Cultures and geography, and for the past 13 years I have worked directly for the Texas legislature drafting legislation. I am incredibly familiar with the processes of government and as a lifelong Texan, have taken enough Texas history (and lived enough of it) to help any student with their studies. I graduated cum laude (with honors) from both Texas A&M and the University of Houston Law Center. During law school, I served as the executive editor of the Houston Journal of International Law and was tapped by the Law Center to tutor first year law students in study skills.

More About This Tutor...

My goal when working with students is to fully describe the steps necessary to solving various classes of problems, often in an outline form, for it is in learning these steps that a student becomes an independent learner. I like to work through as many examples as the student needs, gradually working them into the problem-solving process, until they are able to work a few completely on their own, or, in some way, demonstrate understanding of the material. Of course, this method is a little easier to employ in one on one tutoring sessions, but even with my work in the classroom, I feel student participation is crucial to the learning environment.
While in college (1988-1994), I worked as a grader in the math department, with a goal of providing useful feedback to the students. I also began working as a tutor at Austin Community College (ACC) in their free learning labs at this ... read more

I have been teaching and tutoring students since the 1980's, both in Israel (where I completed my B.A.) and in the United States, first as a graduate student and then as an Assistant Professor of English. My background of studies includes many humanities and social sciences (English Literature, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, History, English Composition), and I have extensive knowledge of science and math subjects at the high school level. I have worked with students from many backgrounds and cultures.
I am a born teacher, and I love the challenge of bringing students who are less than engaged in the learning process to becoming eager and confident learners. I am patient, though I also believe in setting goals and reaching benchmarks and deadlines. My basic philosophy is that all young people are not only able to learn but also capable of much more than th ... read more

I teach students from where they are! Sometimes there are gaps and holes in past learning that can be filled in before the student can soar. I am very personable, encouraging and understand how intimidating the blank page or the prospects of taking a standardized test can be.
I have over 25 years of experience as a high school and college English instructor. I have a bachelor degree in English education and a masters in liberal arts with 18 graduate hours in English. I began and operated my own private, fully accredited high school, test prep and tutoring companies.

Learning how to read critically and write clearly tends to improve academic performance across the board; students with strong reading and writing skills can absorb and communicate information effectively, even when they are unfamiliar with the material. Mastering these basic skills is as important for college and graduate students as for elementary and high school students. I can help you expand your vocabulary, polish your writing skills, and offer strategies for fast and effective reading comprehension, especially in preparation for the verbal sections of standardized tests. Finally, I am still a student myself, so I can sympathize with a heavy workload, and offer strategies for getting assignments finished on time.
I am a graduate student in the History Department at UT-Austin, and I have a BA in Philosophy from Brown University. Having been a teaching assistant at the college ... read more
