I have been an educator for 5 years in the public school system. I tutored through college and while I was getting my masters degree. I have taught from grades ranging from 2nd- 10th grade. I taught elementary for 4 years and I am currently a 10th grade English teacher. I teach the material that is required to pass the Mississippi state test in order for students to graduate. I believe all children are born with the same amount of human potential. However, I’m disheartened by what I’ve witnessed in Mississippi’s public schools: that many children are failing to read at grade level. They are often “left behind.” My approach to teaching is driven by my belief that all children can learn if given the cognitive stimulation coupled with a nurturing, learning environment. I know that children are eager to know, understand, and discern. I believe teachers should not disseminate facts; instead they should cultivate the desire for knowledge. I love to learn, and love passing that on to others. I am a patient personality, and I may present a problem to a student to evaluate where they are. From there, we can go either backwards or to more advanced work. Education is very important for myself and for my children, and I like to instill that learning takes you further in life than where someone may have not even dreamed. I love teaching and working with children and peoples of all ages. I look for each individuals way of learning and apply an apporpriate method that will make the material understandable for the particular student. Sometimes, experimenting with a student and trying different techniques is the best method. Having a student use flash cards, reading aloud, or having the material read to the student are a few of the ways I use to convey material to be learned.I believe that it is a teachers job to identify learning blocks to help a student achieve to the best of his or her ability. I love to work with children who are eager to learn. I know that for most children having to study is not their top priority, so I try to make it fun. I am patient, and know that learning often takes repetition. I believe that most children have the power to learn, some just need some one on one attention.
