A Little Bit About Me...

I like to determine my teaching style by first evaluating a child's current progress and learning style. Learning is a very individualized process, therefore, teaching must also be individual. I am a relaxed person, and I like to find a way to relate material to a child in a way that he/she will not only understand, but retain. Flash cards are great for some children, and other children will learn better with a pneumonic device, while still other learners will make up a song to remember the material.
As an English major, I spent all 4 years at my private instutition tutoring my fellow students, not only in English and writing courses, but in all academic classes in which I had received a grade of "A" or "B". 3 of my 4 years at Lindsey Wilson were spent in the Education department, as I originally wanted to be a high school English teacher. Throughout my career, from tutor to high school teacher to entrepreneur, I have learned how to effectively convey new material to students in many ways (based on Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences), to draw on students’ background knowledge and interest areas in order to teach new material, to be patient with students who do not “get it” on the first try, and to allow students to succeed and grow at their own pace. It is my nature and philosophy to look for the best in students and to do whatever is necessary to help them perform to their fullest potential.
