I have enjoyed the personal gratification of tutoring since high school. Since I was 15 years old, I have shared my knowledge and love of mathematics with people of all ages. I attended Spelman College and Georgia Institute of Technology, where I received my Bachelor of Science in both Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering. I also tutored my peers at these institutions. In 2007 I had the wonderful opportunity of being one of two teachers at the Ann Arbor Academy's lower school for students with learning disabilities. I have worked as a Teacher's Assistant for three years where I did extensive tutoring with one student over the course of the year. I substitute taught for two years where I learned a great deal about schools, particularly elementary schools and their various curriculum and expectations for grade levels. Patience and flexibility are the keys. You can't explain a concept the same way to each student and expect each one will understand. Some students need extra time to grasp the material so it's important not to progress unless there's certainty of complete comprhension. Encouragement is also necessary which will build their confidence, and a confident student is a better one.
My BS in Civil Engineering provided me with an extensive education of advanced Mathematics such as Calculus, Dynamics, Physics, and Statics. I think the best way to teach is to show students how they can break down problems and find answers to questions that may, at first glance, seem overwhelming. I have yet to meet someone who is incapable of grasping a subject, and I am able to stay calm and remain patient as students begin to expand their knowledge in areas that are new to them.
