I bring both personality and creativity to math sessions, and I am concerned with the intellectual and emotional well-being of all tutees/students. I currently have a long list of clients that I serve through one-on-one, in-home tutoring--and have both a high success rate and client loyalty with them.
I have enjoyed the personal gratification of tutoring since high school. Since I was 15 years old, I have shared my knowledge and love of mathematics with people of all ages. I attended Spelman College and Georgia Institute of Technology, where I received my Bachelor of Science in both Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering. I also tutored my peers at these institutions. I have been a tutor for 23 years and I have taught Adult Basic Education for 12 years. I am still continuing my education to receive a Masters degree and plan to get my PhD. I work for a community college and have done advising, enrollment, testing, phone directory, and student sevices. I have attended many professional development workshops on education.
Critical thinking skills and untraditional ways are what I focus on. However the way someone learns, I will try to set the individual up to show how they learn and work with them. I graduated from MSU in 2001 with a degree in Int'l Relations and Business. In 2007 I returned to school. During that time I took all the pre-reqs for the Accelerated Nursing program, earning a 4.0 in each. The classes included psych, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, bio and chem. I have been tutoring professionally for about 2 years now, but before that I worked with a lot of my friends and family. I struggled with ADD/ADHD while in school, and had to teach myself the skills to become a good student. My teaching style could be labeled as Socratic in that I prefer to lead the student to discovering the answers to their own inquiries through a series of guided and redirected questions. Through my prior experience, I have observed that students tend to become overwhelmed by the subject material. By asking the student simple questions that require basic conceptual understanding, the student is able to build confidence and perspective as he draws nearer to a solution. A Little Bit About Me...

I was a teaching assistant during my graduate school, from 1975 to 1980. I was assisting in College level Mathematics courses, including Algebra, Calculus, CAE applications. The only other experience I had was in assisting my kids during their high school studies and did not do a bad job. One of them is a Hardare Test and Validation Engineer at Intel, Portland, Oregon and the other one is doing Medicine at U. Of M.
Tutoring a student who is not doing too good in his subject is not a one or two class job. I will plan the need depending on the versatility, devotion and perseverence to learn.
