I am an active teacher. I want students to understand the subject in the context of their own lives as opposed to just learning definitions. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). Being prepared for such large tests is more than just knowing, it is recalling under pressure. I work with all of that to help the student.
I taught middle school and high school Language and Literature for two years at a private school. During that time I also tutored in the subjects of history, math, and science. Teaching has become a major part of my life. I have taught mostly university students and adults but like teaching children as well. I believe that teaching older students is more challenging than teaching kids. I think adults require a more in depth explanation of grammar rules and structures. In my classes I gave these explanations with an easy going, patient, and fun attitude. With children, I think it is important to show them that hard work is important to achieve success in their future. Living in Korea and Japan opened my eyes to how hard other cultures work in order to reach their goals. From teaching preschoolers how to read to teaching high school students how to survive (and enjoy!) Algebra, I find it rewarding to discover how individual students learn and then help them to succeed in their efforts. I love kids and am able to relate to different age levels and needs. I understand that every child learns differently and has unique strengths and weaknesses. My goal is to be able to teach children fundamental concepts that translate into solving specific problems. For example, I teach phonics as a base for reading so that students are able to use the concepts they have learned to sound out new words.
