My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I enjoy working with students with dyslexia. I have found that all students are gifted regardless of any special needs, and students with dyslexia are no exception. These kids need help with study skills, work habits, fine motor skills, organization, and social skills, as well as interest/career direction and testing.I have worked with curriculum such as Touch Math, Step Up to Writing, Explode the Code, Saxon Phonics, Dolch, and Handwriting Without Tears. Using these and other curriculums, I have had great success with these gifted students.

15 years of teaching children with special needs has given me a great understand of what your child needs. I have a passion for teaching and love to work with all students, seeing results in growth of self esteem, knowledge and the meeting of their potential. I have 15 years' experience in the special education field. Since I started my career, I have learned the art of communication and the ability to work with students of all ages, parents, and staff in consulting and educational interaction. I have a Master's degree in special education and hold both my clear Level 2 mild/moderate special education credential and my multiple teaching credential, as well as my autism authorization. Over the years I have found that the best learning and the best teaching is done on an individualized basis, and so I have decided to continue my career as a one-on-one tutor.

My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I am currently working with a Dyslexic 2nd grader, with great success!

I assess the student's level of mastery by listening to parents, communicating with the student (in whatever appropriate way needed) and then doing some basic testing. Once the student is assessed, I design a learning environment and activities that coincide with the student's specific strengths, while adding some elements of challenge. I tend to work in a very focused way for 10-15 minutes, and then add in tactile activities (like Bannana Grams for example) for 10 minutes or so, in order to maintain the student's attention. Children and youth who are struggling to read and write get patient assistance to learn the words correctly. My work will improve writing techniques (including essays and basic writing skills), reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and literary creativity. For younger children I work with acquiring reading skills, word recognition, pattern recognition, spel ... read more

Make school work.

Not all students are successful and the trick is to identify the reasons behind the lack of success. The issues that students have with school are diverse; procrastination, lack of organization, failure to plan, lack of awareness, ineffective habits, learning disabilities, and differences are all possible explanations for school failure. I work with students one on one to help them pinpoint where things break down for them and then work with them to find strategies to help them manage the skills and material they are asked to learn and master. I am there to guide, not just instruct.
I have been in education for 16 years. I specialize in working with students with ADD/ADHD, specific learning disabilities as well as students who underachieve. I have a Master's Degree in Special Education and have successfully worked with students all over the Bay Area to help them realize their ... read more

I want them to feel that they can do anything.

I love teaching and working with all childern. I believe that all childern have the abilty to learn. I am a believer that childern can learn anything if given the chance. As a child who grew up with a mild disabilty i know how hard it is to have teachers who belive in you. now that i am voluteering at a special needs preschool, i treat all childern with respect and kindness that they deserve. All childern have the potiental to suceed and become an important part of society. I belive that i can make a diffrence in a childs life if i take the time to indivually learn the needs and gifts of each of my childern and consentrate on this, instead of the childerns diffrence.

Most recently, I was engaged in research and writing of my dissertation. I worked at a local High school for three years teaching inner-city Hispanic youth. I was the primary special education teacher for all students grades 9-12. During this time I was also a graduate assistant, co-teaching with professors and supervising graduate students during their internships in local schools. For the past two years I have been working with Riverside Publishing. With Riverside Publishing I normed the WJC IV Test of Achievement.

A Little Bit About Me...

My belief is based upon the idea that all children are different and consequently, they learn differently. I have been taught how to approach those of ESL backgrounds, a multitude of handicaps, and learning disabilities, just to name a few. For instance, every once in a while, a child will take too long to copy notes off of the board or doesn't understand directions that well. For istances like this, I write down notes and tape them to their desks, provide additional coaching and prompts, or even modify assignments. I have found that teaching is what I love to do and learning about children through the perspective of my education has made me so much more successful in how I approach children as a class, but also at an individual level.
