Experienced tutor specializing in science and mathematics

I have experience working with students who are advanced and seeking supplementary tutoring as well as with students who are having difficulty with a subject. I have tutored mathematics as well as chemistry, biology, physics, and other subjects. I have tutored students from a range of ages and I worked with my first student over four years ago while I was in college.
I try to work with students to find connections between different aspects of the material that we're working on as well as to find connections to other subjects. I find that by relating specific topics to broader perspectives on a subject as well as related subjects, the student can gain a greater appreciation for the coherence and importance of a particular subject area.

A Little Bit About Me...

The process is just as important as the product. If a student can come up with the correct answer, but he or she has no idea how or why it is correct or how they got it, I feel like their learning is incomplete. Especially in Math, but also in many other subjects, concepts build upon each other. For this reason, I like to explain not just *how* to get there, but also *why* we got that answer; then students have a firmer foundation for the trickier concepts. I love seeing the lightbulb "go on," when kids finally "get it."
I have been a teacher for 7 years. I have taught in a small-town private, Christian two-room schoolhouse (K-8); I currently substitute teach for OPS, and have been to all but one school in the district. I have also tutored on and off over the years, both individually and in small groups, both privately and through school district or companies. I enjoy working with ... read more

My comments on tutoring SAT - Verbal : I received a score of 730 on the verbal part of the SAT when I applied to college. In the past year I helped prepare a Chinese student applying to college in the US for the SAT. (He was admitted to five of the seven universities he applied to and is planning to attend the University of Massachusetts.)

I try to find out what a student is interested in and incorporate that. In my work with Lincoln Public Schools I often have extra time with students since we complete the required material more quickly than the general class, and I often use that for special projects that apply the concepts we're learning to fields like computer science, architecture, and art.
I've been a Mentor with Lincoln Public Schools for over a year. Mentors function as one-on-one teachers for gifted students in an area of their strength. I've taught math to elementary school students (many of whom were in middle-school level math) and am also qualified as a Chinese mentor for all levels and a Social Studies mentor. I also work at the Kumon Math and Reading Center and primarily assist young students who are learning to read. In the past I have assisted Chinese students preparing for the SAT and TOEFL, and als ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I taught recitation for Honors Differential Equations, Differential Equations, Calculus 3, Calculus 2 and Introduction to Computer Science as an undergraduate at Georgia Tech and physics and astronomy labs as a graduate student at the University of Tennessee. I was consistently rated highly as a teacher by students.
I see teaching as a dialog between teacher and student and adjust the speed and depth of my teaching to best help the student succeed. Most importantly I want to the student to leave with a greater understanding of the subject than when they entered.
