I enjoy teaching high schoolers for a variety of reasons. Mostly because of how honest I can be with them. I enjoy teaching hands-on, real life application of the sciences in a way that students can understand the concept as well as the usefulness to them out in the real world. I believe all children want to learn. Sometimes it takes some work to find the spark that ignites the learning process. Unfortunately, a larger classroom may not be the best environment to find that spark in some kids. I've been successful with both children and adults because I have a knack for finding out what motivates them. As a teacher, I bring passion for both creativity-based and logic-based subjects. I don't subscribe to the right-brain/left-brain paradigm. I believe students can be strong in both mathematics and writing, and it is my desire to help students realize this, because so few people do. In the classroom I rely on traditional lecture, supplemented by Powerpoint presentations, animations, and lists and diagrams on the white board. I usually assign a research paper. In the last few semesters I've implemented through Blackboard some online testing, as well as tutorial "homework" quizzes, where the students get feedback directing them to coverage of particular sections of the text.
