A Little Bit About Me...

My goal in studying linguistics is to become a professional ESL teacher. I am very much interested in language development at all levels, but especially in nonnative language development. I am a native speaker of English, but I am also fluent in Spanish as well. I love to teach and learn language. I am a professional student currently enrolled in a master of arts program for applied linguistics at the University of Montana. I will be teaching a course in English for Academic Purposes next year at the university. My specialty concerns the teaching of the four primary skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) to nonnative learners of the English language. As a life-long student, I aspire to a life of teaching. While an undergraduate at St. Olaf College, I developed strong communication and interpersonal skills as a writing center tutor and ESL mentor. After graduating magna cum laude in 2005, I became a volunteer educator in Chicago and taught elementary and middle school math, reading, art and social studies. Today, as a graduate student and composition instructor at the University of Montana, I relish the opportunity to pursue literature and develop my classroom teaching expertise. With my years of being around and in an educational environment, I have picked up patterns of repetition and summary to reinforce ideas being conveyed. I, myself, learn best by doing. Through studying adult learning styles, I discovered that studies show utilizing all facets of learning - writing, audio, visual, and hands on - leads to the highest levels of retention. I teach by 1) talking by the student to determine his or her best learning style and 2) utilizing the various methods listed above so that the student can retain the maximum amount of information through his or her best learning style.
