A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching children is a passion of mine. All children are different, therefore they learn in many ways. I believe it is essential to include various activities in the classroom that allow students to gain knowledge and information they need. I believe that integrating technology, music, dance, and physical activities help students learn. Using manipulatives and hands-on activities will allow students to not only learn the material, but discover that learning is fun! My style is relaxed, but focused, with a touch of humor to ease nerves. The first step is creating comfort and trust between the student and the tutor. To do this, when coaching Chemistry, I would have the student present a problem. Then, I'd say, well, let's figure this out together. And, truly, that is what we would do, step by step, by asking questions. What do we know? What do we need to figure out? Essentially showing them the thought process out loud, and involving them in obtaining the solution. This approach helps develop confidence. Repeating creates familiarity. Eventually, most students become confident enough to try one on their own, and my role becomes encourager, light-hearted and sincere.
