This is one of my top subjects! Elementary Phonics is one of my top subjects!I would almost consider myself an expert on phonics. It is the basics of learning to read. A child must know phonics and sight reading in combination to be able to read, but without the basics of phonics they will never be able to sound out any word for themselves and memorize it.Unfortunately mot schools today only teach one or the other. Which is, I believe why so many of our children can't read now. They are missing one of the 2 fundamentals of reading. I am currently tutoring a 7 yr. old in phonic.phonics and taught both of my children phonics at the same time as I taught them their Alphabet.Which is why, I believe they could both read at a 5th grade level when they entered kindergarten.
