About Me

Experience Summary

3 years experience as an educator in the Copperas Cove Independent School District. 2 years experience working independently as a tutor in all core courses with grades pre-K through 6th grade. I have taught all ranges of students, including special education students with ADHD and both high functioning autism and retardation. In the public school setting the special education classes were all taught together as one. However I have tutored them on a one on one basis more effectively. Just like every other student, they need individual attention to retain what they are taught and have their own learning style that can only be found in a personal tutor that understands their behavior and learning needs. I have that experience and knowledge.

Teaching Style

Creative teaching for a life time love of learning. I gather everything at my disposal to work with my students and teach to their particular style of learning. I have used basketball to teach social studies. Vegetables to teach science. Peanuts cereal and even M & M's to teach math. A lecture is not always the best method of teaching, but that is what they get in the classroom. A tutor has more flexibility.

My Hobbies

I have a wide range of hobbies. From music to art, to the internet and reading to trivia. I also volunteer for any cause I feel calling me whenever time allows

Subject Commentary

ADD/ADHD Proficiency: Experienced
I have tutored children with ADHD in the past and am very patient and capable of getting them to focus on the task at hand with creative teaching skills that encourage them to want to engage in the process of learning the subject matter be presented to them. I know the signs that they have had enough and are shutting down for the day and not to push any further because they will simply not retain anything else. You must be flexible with a special needs student and work with them. Not teach at them.
Elementary This is one of my top subjects!
I have taught elementary education both in the Public school system and as a tutor. I prefer teaching as a tutor because each child has their own individual style of learning. As a tutor I am able to adjust my teaching methods to each student's individual style and give them the individual attention each one deserves or may need.
Elementary Math Proficiency: Experienced
I have taught elementary math in the public school system, at home with my own children and as a tutor. I use everything at my disposal. I have been known to use peanuts sitting on a counter to successfully teach double digit subtraction before. I taught a first grader to count to 100 with a 100 box. which is a 10 X 10 box that he could then visualize while counting. It just depends on what style of learner the student is as to what teaching method I will use. Some use a hands on approach, some visualize, some just neeed auditory.
Elementary Phonics This is one of my top subjects! Proficiency: Experienced
I would almost consider myself an expert on phonics. It is the basics of learning to read. A child must know phonics and sight reading in combination to be able to read, but without the basics of phonics they will never be able to sound out any word for themselves and memorize it.Unfortunately mot schools today only teach one or the other. Which is, I believe why so many of our children can't read now. They are missing one of the 2 fundamentals of reading. I am currently tutoring a 7 yr. old in phonic.phonics and taught both of my children phonics at the same time as I taught them their Alphabet.Which is why, I believe they could both read at a 5th grade level when they entered kindergarten.
Elementary Reading This is one of my top subjects!
I have taught reading in both the public school and as a tutor. I believe reading should be taught with both phonics and sight. Unfortunately, schools today usually only teach one or the other. Which is why, I believe, so many of our children can'y read noe days. I begin with phonics, and with time teach the student easy sight words to memorize, add more difficult ones as we move along and before you know it the student is reading like a pro. This has worked on my students for 30 some years.
Elementary Science Proficiency: Experienced
Science is such a fun subject to learn and to teach. I once had a public school class that had to learn about the 5 senses. I was to teach them about how each could affect the others. I brought in a potato, an onion and a knife. After making sure nobody had any allergies to either the potato or onion, the students set about to being awed their teacher had a pocket knife in class. Then I set to work. I cut a few pieces off of each. I called a volunteer up and had them smell the onion, showing it to the class, then popped the potato in their mouth. Again showing it to the class. I asked what they just ate. They were spitting it out as they said "onion" The class was roaring with laughter and begging to be next. I should have taken in 2 of each of the onions and potatoes because I went through them very quickly with all of the volunteers. The kids got the point and had a great time at the same time. A lesson doesn't have to be a boring lecture. Students should enjoy learning to create a love of learning that will last for a life time.
Elementary Social Studies Proficiency: Experienced
I taught Social studies in the public school system. Even though I consider this to be an exciting subject, students are often bored by the subject matter. Especially something like longitude and latitude lines. To increase their interest on a beautiful Spring day I took them, a basketball, a globe and a piece of chalk outside to the basketball court. I drew a few lines and numbers on the court while the watched and wondered what I was doing. Then I split them up into teams. We played "around the world" When a student made a shot from one of the numbered lines they had to find the corresponding longitude and latitude line on the globe to get the point for their team. Word got around the school fast. As each class rotated in they were excited to be there and by the end of that chapter, I'm very proud to say that is the very 1st year every single one of those students passed that chapter test with at least a B. It's all a matter of creative teaching and that is what I do best.
Elementary Vocabulary Proficiency: Experienced
As an educator in the public school system for over 3 years at the preschool to 6th grade level and as a tutor for the same grades I have gained the experience and knowledge to tutor students in vocabulary in creative ways that will allow them to retain the knowledge they learn so they can master the subject and carry it with them for a life time to further their education in all of the subjects as they advance through school and life with confidence.
Pre-Algebra Proficiency: Experienced
I am actually capable of teaching college algebra because I passed it easily with an A. However I am only comfortable tutoring pre-algebra to students. It doesn't require a special calculator normally and can all be done with pencil and paper as all math should be. In my pre-algebra classes on campus I often helped my Proff explain some of the concepts to the other students in a language that was easier for them to understand.
Special Education Proficiency: Experienced
I have taught many different special needs classes in the public schools such as ADD/ADHD and high functioning Autism, high functioning retardation and behavioral problem students. Each student needs a different approach to learning. None can be lumped into one classroom and must have individual attention. My teaching methods recognize the whatever each individual student needs to be able to focus and learn to study the best.I approach each student as if they were not a special education student, but merely a student who needs a bit of extra attention. They get rewards like stickers for good achievements. I encourage parents to be involved in their child's on going education as much as possible with weekly assignments the student must follow through on to receive the stickers, but the parents absolutely MUST be involved to help with these assignments. i always give the parents a daily assessment of how the student is doing.
