A Little Bit About Me...

I've worked as an engineer in the electronics and electrical engineering industry for 14 years. I have tutored children in math and science for the last 4 years, most recently in high school algebra and geometry.
I believe in demonstrating how to do the work and then guiding the children as they apply what has been demonstrated. The best way to learn is by doing under supervised guidance. Once the children learn to apply the proper steps to accomplish the task at hand, the feeling of accomplishment drives them to continue on their own.

Having always pursued excellence in eduation, I graduated from the Univ of Colorado with a 3.5/4 in Mech. Engineering. I then worked for Motorola in Phoenix, where I received security clearances for work for the military. Although I enjoyed my work, I realized my true passion was teaching, and earned my certification at the University of Phoenix. My student teaching at a local middle school in Phoenix was successful, earning special recognition. At Heritage High School where I taught, I was trained in a progressive teaching method for algebra. A Little Bit About Me...

I like to first get an idea of what the student knows about the problem.. I find that the more time I spend listening to what they know it naturally turns into what pieces I need to add-in. Unless they came to the session to learn new material that would be a different scenario entirely in which it would depend on the student how I taught. I would have to find out what type of a learner they are. Whether it be a visual learner, if they need examples or are an entirely conceptual type of learner.
Throughout college I had extensive experience working with classmates while we solved math equations and physics problems together. I did volunteer work teaching English to children in Mexico as well as teaching English to college age students in Mexico.

I have taught middle school students reading, English, and mathematics for 10 years. I earned my bachelor's in Elementary Education from Utah State with an emphasis in mathematics. As a middle school teacher, I have found that one of the main reasons students struggle is that they have reading deficits. This prompted me to pursue a Master’s degree in Literacy. I have tutoring experience in mathematics and reading. I am also a musician. I play the violin and sing as a mezzo-soprano. I have musical experience with college and community symphonies and choirs.
I enjoy working with students who are elementary aged up through college aged. I particularly love working with middle school students. I am a kid at heart. I understand and relate to children of all ages. I believe that if you are patient with those that are trying to learn, and can find things that they relate to, teaching becomes easier for everyone involved. I have found success in the past with helping youth, and am confident that I can earn their trust enough to assist them in their studies.
I had a son with some special needs. I had to help him with his math throughout most of his junior high and high school years. From time to time, other students in my neighborhood have asked for assistance with their school studies. Assisting them when needed is something I have done several times over the years.

I enjoy watching students grasp the scientific method as it is something that comes naturally to most people if put in the right context. Science is rewarding to teach because it incorporates other disciplines like math. I often receive comments about my effective teaching style. I believe this is because of my education and that teaching science is a passion for me and a lifetime pursuit. I have noticed that people understand science better when it is related to their life. In other words, the student can apply a scientific concept in their own life. I have yet to meet a student unable to grasp scientific concepts that has gone through the mental exercise of the scientific method.
I have a strong interest in the sciences of the world. I earned a bachelor degree in ecology including a minor in botany. I also earned a Master degree in biology studying mountain quail. During my under ... read more
