Individualized learning/teaching for optimal comprehension

I take a hands on material approach to learning/teaching. I feel that young students learn best when they can physically learn, such as through blocks/puzzles/interactive learning devices and other similar approaches. I try to let the student use their hands as much as I can to aid in their learning process. I adjust to the student/learner as I am told or discover their learning preferences. However, in my experience and research, I have noticed that active learning and discovery-based learning are arguably most effective mechanisms for knowledge retention. A Little Bit About Me...

I have tutored math, chemistry and physics both officially and unofficially throughout most of my undergraduate education. My BS in physics, as well as my work in an atmospheric physics lab, has given me a strong mathematical and physical science background. I have tutored, and taught some classes in summers and winter breaks both while at UMBC, and at Towson, where I currently attend graduate school for education.
I belief that conceptual understanding is the foundation of learning. Teaching kids to solve a specific problem that they can't do doesn't accomplish much, in my opinion. When working with students my ultimate goal is for them to be able to explain the concepts to me. I usually start sessions with any questions they have, here is where I would explain concepts in terms easier to understand (usually methods I used when learning the material). Once they feel comfortable will ask them questions that range from simple plug and chug math problems, to more complex explanations. Even if the student tells me they don't know the answer I will ask them to try. I find most do know the answer or only need a little help to obtain it. This ultimately creates confidence which leads to better test scores.
