Certified Teacher Looking To Help Others As A Tutor

I prefer to have materials prepared prior to any tutoring session so communication ahead of time will be essential. If I have an idea of what is expected of me then I am able to help modify the session to fit the learner. I like to use both direct teach as well as discussion to help guide the tutoring session.
I have a wide variety of educational experience and have recently crossed over into the realm of education as a Special Education/At-Risk teacher with the Edgerton School District. My current position has me utilizing differentiated instruction and modification techniques with nearly 50 students throughout the day which will enhance my ability to tutor others who need help. My particular areas of expertise are Social Studies, Spanish, English and ASVAB/GED test prep. I am weaker in Math and Science.

Making A Difference

In May 2012, I received my bachelors degree in English with a Literature Emphasis and a minor in Writing. I graduated with a 3.6 g.p.a. (Cum Laude Honors.) Throughout college, I took various education courses that focused on educational philosophy and physiology, elementary and secondary concentrations, and students with disabilities. I was able to obtain 36 education credits and in 2009, I was admitted into the school of education at my university where I was able to engage in student teachings, researchers, and observations. In 2011, I participated in the student outreach program where I would visit elementary, middle, and high schools to tutor them in English, Math, or Science and guide them through the learning process. From 2007 to 2012, I was part of the writing gym at school where I would help fellow students with their papers and tutor them about his/her grammar and writing struc ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with students of all ages and needs. I have worked with children in our public schools, as well as with autistic children in their homes. I have learned that patience and praise are major tools in teaching, enabling students to experience success and confidence in their education.
I tutored online for AOL for ten years. This included all grades, with emphasis in the science and music fields. I also edited articles for their knowledge database. Editing involved examining articles, making sure that each one was clear, concise, and free of mistakes. I wrote many articles for the database, as well, in several different areas of study.

I love teaching and working with all types of students. I believe that to enable our children to learn we must first teach them how to be critical thinkers. I have always had a passion for reading and hope to help other students discover their passion.
As a young adult I always had a passion for teaching. I began tutoring at a young age and then after high school began working towards my teaching certificate in English. While in college I worked as a private tutor and also volunteered as a tutor at a local middle school. I currently teach high school English and also advise our school's newspaper and yearbook.

I love teaching and getting to know my students along the way. I have worked with many people; some young, some older, and some who spoke very little English. I have learned that everyone is capable of achieving extraordinary things, sometimes they just need to have the information presented in a simplistic memorable way, and that is what I strive to teach in every lesson. I like to break things down into the simplest concepts and make connections between what is already known and what is currently being taught. I understand that everyone has a different learning curve, and I teach to the student's pace. I believe that everyone has great potential within them, and I strive to make a difference in all of my students' lives by showing them how well they can do.

More About This Tutor...

As a graduate assistant at Northern Illinois University, I taught composition, primarily using popular culture as a topic for expository writing and developing critical thinking skills and techniques. I have also served as a substitute teacher in the Rockford Public Schools in several subject areas. Most recently, I spent five+ years as the Communications Editor for a global manufacturing company, where I was responsible for all sales literature and communication in the North American market. Having tired of the office environment and its distractions, I was fortunate enough to be able to resign this position and now offer my services on a freelance basis, which allows me to focus solely on what I enjoy in my work.
I believe that learning occurs through doing, particularly when it comes to writing. Students become better writers by putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). Th ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

The description of my teaching style changes with each new class I receive. I am a strong believer in the Multiple Intelligence approach to teaching, as individual students learn in many different ways. In my classroom, expectations are explained at the beginning of each lesson. Because attention spans only last between 12 and 15 minutes, I make sure to rotate activities to insure that my students are engaged. I am also a strong believer in "real world" lessons and activities that my students can relate to. This encourages my students' critical thinking abilities as well as a desire to learn. I am confident in my style and very happy to report that my students' scores have risen every year I have been at my current school.

As a high school student I participated in peer tutoring. While in high school I volunteered to serve as a tutor in Algebra, Geometry, Chemistry, Zoology, and Biology. I graduated with 27 AP credits which helped me complete a B.S. at Clarke College in 3 years. At Clarke I found that tutoring my peers helped both the student and me. As a biology major at Clarke College I took many courses in science including biology, chemistry, and physics. Clarke is a liberal arts college so I took a variety of courses including English and History. At Clarke I tutored peers in many classes such as Human Biology, General Chemistry, and Elementary Physics. I also revised and edited papers along with providing topics and direction to written works.

While working as assistant's to professors, I gained experience during guest lectures to classes. In additon, for two months in 2009, I was an English teacher in a distance learning program wherein I taught English to elementary school Korean students via the web. I strive to develop each student's interest in the subject at hand. He or she is far more likely to enjoy learning and retain information this way. I follow a method of individual trial and error supplemented with examples and corrections.
I have recently graduated from the University of Delaware and intend to pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry within the next few years. My major was in Chemistry with a minor in Biochemistry; I also focused on Theatre, Japanese, French, English, and Biology. A Little Bit About Me...

In 2005 I obtained a degree in Sociology with a minor in Spanish and in 2009 obtained a masters degree in Applied Behavior Analysis. I have worked with children of normal intelligence and what cognitive disabilities. Although my degrees are not directly related to math, I use mathmatical concepts daily. I bring to the table the ability to use math terms in a day to day experience, rather than just in a classroom setting.
I believe that all children can learn, and when a child has difficulty grasping a concept, the teacher must change their technique. I have used a variety of methods when working with children. Manipulatives, flash cards ,games and stimulus equivalence training are just a few. I also believe that a child that needs extra help with a subject should not feel like they are being punished. A teaching session should not just help a person learn a concept, but help ... read more

I am a friendly and easy to talk to person. I strive to make my tutoring and mentoring sessions into conversations rather than a one-way lecture. When tutoring or mentoring, I usually let the student lead the session so that I can assess where his or her strengths and weaknesses lie. I like to let them take the initiative because it actively engages them in the learning process versus passively listening to me. I also like to break down concepts to the basics and share my own tips on how to remember and understand these concepts. Finally, I believe ample and genuine encouragement is the way to motivate students to be successful.
I graduated cum laude from the Communication Studies program at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). UCLA is a renowned research university and as a result I gained extensive experience in research, presenting, reading and writing relating to th ... read more
