Helping students learn and learn how to grow

My teaching experience is broad across subjects and age levels. Learning and teaching excite me and I like to think that attitude rubs off on my students. It can be fun to learn, and even those subjects a student does not find enjoyable, can prove satisfying. I've taught middle school and high school, as well as at Bellevue College, Renton technical College, and North Seattle Community College. My own experiences include not just teaching, but also professional broadcasting, journalism (both broadcast and print newswriting, creative writing, editing, and reporting), writing a book, supervising employees as well as students, and poetry awards.
I like students to be comfortable, enjoy their experiences with me as much as possible, and learn not only the material they need to study, but also habits and practices that will help them with future studies.

As a college instructor I had the independence to effectively plan and edit syllabi, give daily presentations and lectures, and regularly mentor students from all walks of life. I also frequently initiated and organized guest speakers’ presentation dates and topics, networked with local politicians and foreign diplomats, graded research papers, drafted daily lecture plans and participated in curriculum review committee meetings. I especially enjoyed these tasks because they increased my ability to consistently meet deadlines and run various projects at once. I believe that my teaching experience enhanced my overall resourcefulness, including my ability to work and communicate with culturally diverse populations.

With nearly a lifetime of teaching youth and adult learners, I have focused on teaching computer skills in the more recent period of my career. Computer skills include the physical use of the PC (personal computer) and Microsoft Office software—Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Windows. In my classes, I also included the teaching of good writing skills for my students to use in writing their term papers. Other subject proficiencies include psychology, sociology, math-statistics, history, physics and library skills.
I taught to engage the audio, visual and kinesthetic capabilities of each student in the learning process. I encouraged note taking by creating handout outlines of the information being covered and students inserted notes into each section of the outlines and I used physical objects to demonstrate how computer systems work and students took apart, put together and troubles ... read more

After graduating from high school with honors in both the International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement programs, I went on to earn two bachelor degrees from the University of the Pacific, one in International Relations and the other in French Language and Literature, in addition to a Minor in Economics. While earning my BA in French, I studied abroad in Paris, France. Upon my return, I tutored college level French and economics courses. I graduated in May 2009 with a BS in Engineering from Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, a prestigious technical school in Needham, Massachusetts. Aside from my engineering coursework, I completed an arts and humanities concentration and capstone in Political Science, focusing on third world development and ethno-political conflict. I served as a course assistant for math and science courses throughout much of college. I mostly tutored first year students (subjects included Calculus, Physics: Mechanics and Electromagnetism, Engineering: modeling, simulation, analysis, and Partial Differential Equations), and did some grading as well. I really enjoy tutoring, both one-on-one and with small groups. As a high school student I took Spanish through AP Spanish Language (and scored a 5 on the AP exam), and took a college level Spanish grammar course beyond that. I also attended an ext ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As a child, I wasn't very interested in science, math, or the outdoors. It took an inspiring high school teacher who challenged me with interesting projects to show me how fascinating biology and ecology were. I strive to be that kind of teacher- not just to show my students how to get the right answer, but why it's interesting enough to care about. Over the past 5 years, I have taught college biology and ecology laboratory courses, tutored elementary school children in math and reading, and led GRE preparation courses. I have a master's degree in zoology, and my tutoring expertise is in the life sciences, math through Calculus I and statistics, SAT/ACT/GRE preparation, and research writing.
I believe that every child is capable of learning, and once they see how a subject is relevant to their life and goals, they usually want to learn all they can about it. I try to make academic ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My experience in tutoring is a mix of working with large tutoring agencies as well as local one-on-one at home tutoring services. I have worked with students on elementary school math and reading, as well as SAT and ACT preparation. My greatest experience was when I helped a particular student with her writing skills, not just by drilling and practicing, but by boosting her confidence. With a system of positive reinforcements, we started to build upon her strengths. Her grammar and punctuation have improved vastly, and even her skills in other areas have improved because she is more willing to take risks. Those results were quite rewarding for me, and I realized that I want to help more students break barriers and achieve new limits.
Studies show that people who are used to success are more likely to try again and again when confronted with a challenge. My goal is to build a s ... read more

I have a very active, hands-on teaching style. Since every individual learns differently, I incorporate visual, aural, oral, and physical elements into my all of my lesson plans. I listen to what my student's objectives are, the parent or guardian's objectives, as well as personally identifying overlooked areas for improvement. Having set the goals, I work with the student to achieve those goals.
Since graduating from Bryn Mawr College, I have spent nine years tutoring and teaching students a wide variety of subjects including English as a foreign language, Spanish, Russian, music, elementary academics, adult basic education, special needs education, and transition skills.
