My comments on tutoring Chess : I learned to play when I was 13 years old. Since then, I've been practicing to participate in tournaments representing my school, my hometown and my state by myself and by groups.

There are several ways to learn. My favorite and the one I work best is to observe. Mostly I understand the things when I see them working. When I teach, I always do an explanation first and then I put it on practice so the student can fully use this new skill.
I am from Mexico, so most of my experience in these three areas of knowledge. In my chess experience, I've been involved in this awesome game since I was 13. I've participated in many tournaments in my Hometown Matamoros. I represented several times my high school, my hometown, and once my state in a national tournament. I taught children how to play chess in my neighborhood as hobbies because all of my older brothers play chess, so I played with them during more than 3 years and many children got interested. When I remember, the children asked me to play with them and asked me for advises on their new tactics. In my co ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Although I have recently graduated with a degree in business, I am interested in pursuing a career involving people. My previous employment was a sales position that was very customer-oriented. I also have 3 years of experience helping children by teaching swimming lessons. Assisting my 15-year-old sister with her school work is also a regular activity.
I believe in a teaching style that reflects a student's learning style. Whether they learn best by hearing, seeing, or doing it is important to cater to the student. My teaching style works around this philosphy and tends to be a combination of all 3 styles.

This past year I graduated magna cum laude from Carleton College with a Bachelor’s in History and Medieval Studies. I have studied abroad at Oxford University, and in Rome and Romania, and have a lot of experience in writing research reports and essays. As a student of the liberal arts I have studied a wide variety of subjects, from theology to environmental science, from Old English to statistics and am comfortable in almost any subject. During this past academic year I tutored a home schooled child one on one several hours a week in world history and research methodology; I was in effect his sole teacher in the subject and also helped him improve his writing and study skills. For the past four years I have taught chess to children aged six to ten, emphasizing analytical skills.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have enjoyed working closely with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities as a Writing Consultant, ESL tutor, and Teaching Assistant. I've had the pleasure of working with students who were puzzling over the minutiae of how to properly format a senior thesis to APA format and nervous freshman approaching their first English paper with trepidation. I am a firm believer that the job of a tutor is to work with the student, not with their texts or problems. Our motto at Carleton's "The Write Place" used to be, "We work with writers, not with their writing," and I believe this is the attitude any tutor should take towards the process of tutoring: student first.
As recent graduate of Carleton College (magna cum laude), my experiences in the diverse fields of English and Cognitive Science over the past four years have given me a deep appreciation and enthusiasm for the unique lic ... read more

I have a very modifiable style of teaching, meaning I cater to the student or students. I quickly learn the curriculum and can find multiple ways to teach it. This allows me to utilize the students major styles of learning and develop the areas where they may struggle. Teaching this way helps mold a complete student who is able to understand themselves and can learn from any lesson.
While attending and completing four years of Education courses at a well respected institution I was focused and driven to complete the curriculum and focus on creative lesson planning. Maintaining a GPA of 3.6 in Education courses while participating in four years of collegiate sports really polished my ability to multi-task. The preparation and focus applied in college paired with an immense interest in History has molded me into a life learner as well as teacher. Most of my experience is related t ... read more

Through my years of coaching and teaching, I have learned that a teacher must adapt his/her teaching style to the learning style of the student. A child can learn in different ways, and it is my job to find the most effective way to help the child learn. Growing up in a large family while my mother ran her own daycare, I learned to be very patient and caring for children. I believe it is important to be consistent and constructive in guiding our children to reach success. My goal is to provide a positive environment for every child in order to achieve his/her full potential.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy when there is a connection between educator and student, and that student is able to apply wisdom to solve problems, and ultimately succeed throughout life. Most students that have difficulty with class seem, to me, to not have confidence in their abilities or potential. I believe in always looking for something positive when tutoring, and to build from a foundation of hope. Motivation and an understanding of the joy and benefits of learning are elements I try to instill in students. I also understand that at times I am wrong, and, more importantly, that I can learn from my students. Respecting a student, listening carefully to their concerns, and grasping where there is a block to their learning are key to adjusting what and how to teach him or her. Great teaching involves great communication.

My tutoring style usually depend on the person I am tutoring, however the following is my basic beliefs, which guide my teaching methods. I believe that you can make any subject matter easy by focusing on the basics and relating the subject matter to things the student can identify with. This allows the student to not become overwhelmed and more acceptable to the subject matter. In addition, I believe that the students should be challenged and encouraged to reiterate what you teach them. This allows the tutor to become more aware of the students needs and helps the tutor refine their methods.
During my time at the University of Minnesota, I have been employed at several different tutoring organizations. First I worked with K through 6th grade age children at Village Parks. I greatly enjoy teaching children at all levels. Through a variety of approaches and encouraging persistence, I believe children can gain knowledge of and proficiency in all subjects. A multi-disciplinary approach ensures a child's growth has both depth and breadth. I aim to teach in a way that develops the intellect and cultivates the character of my students so that they become critical and virtuous members of and contributors to society.
I became interested in tutoring during my three years of graduate study at Princeton Theological Seminary. Studying theology in my undergraduate and graduate work required me to invest strongly in multiple subjects such as history, philosophy, languages, politics and literature. This equipped me to tutor multiple subjects at various levels.

One thing I have learned in my many years as a tutor is that each student is unique. I try to be flexible in my approach. With grammar and mechanics, I have found that a directive manner is often the best approach; sometimes, however, students require clarification of ideas and organization, in which case I pose questions and share observations, rather than instruct. With reading assignments, clarification of thesis, organization, and vocabulary are usually most helpful. Overall, I try to be as student-centered as possible in my approach to tutoring, without sacrificing a commitment to high quality instruction.
