My approach is learner-centered, which means that I see each student as an individual and strive to tailor our instructional exchange to meet the needs of each person. I believe that teaching is dialogic; it is through dialogue that instructors and students together engage in the exploration process that leads to learning. I do not ascribe to the "open head, pour in facts" approach to teaching. Rather, I seek to facilitate problem solving, critical thinking, data gathering, and logical analysis that extends the student's knowledge, but more importantly teaches them to learn how to learn.

I was a Missionary in Panama for fourteen years. Learned Spanish through a two-year course in the country. As a missionary, I went on to teach Literacy and Bible to indigenous peoples there. After coming home stateside, although not certified, I earned extra income by giving classes in English to Hispanics in my home. I also taught English to monolingual Hispanics through an Afterschool program in Northeast Elementary, Jackson, MI. I worked as a Paraeducator in Northeast Elementary, as a General Education Paraeducator, but I often subbed for regular ESL teacher aides in the classroom. In General Ed, I often got to tutor reading groups with Hispanic children at the teacher's request.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have trained employees in both manual labor and on-the-job customer service and sales. In addition, I was responsible for coordinating training programs for in plant positions like hi-lo driving and safety as well as Adult Education (Speed Reading, English as a Second Language, etc.). I held a sales position for 25 years and possess strong people skills and problem solving and conflict resolution abilities. While enrolled at Davenport University in 2008-2009, I received a 4.0 GPA that included a Training and Development course.
I am happily retired at a relatively young age and am seeking an outlet for my skills and abilities that can benefit others. My greatest joy is spending time with our 6 grandchildren, as I have always liked kids.
