I Make Less Mess and More Message Out of Math

I listen intently to what students ask to decipher their level of understanding. I wish for the students to truely understand and not merely mimic. Math is thinking. Too often I see people who at first are struggling with math treating it as a mimicing subject. Some repetitive practice is needed, but understanding prior to the repetition is better.
I have been teaching since I started college. I taught in the tutoring center at SIUE as a freshman. Since then I have taught a wide variety of classes at Lewis and Clark Community College and St. Louis Community College. I also have had students that I have tutored for many years until they moved off to college. Even then I sometimes was called for tutoring when they were back home. My comments on tutoring Math : I am currently helping several students prepare for the Math section of the SAT and the ACT. I am also able to offer some help with Math through Algebra I and Geometry. I am not as experienced in these subjects so I am willing to offer discounted rates.

I graduated from Princeton University with a BA (cum laude) in History and will be starting a Ph.D. program in History in the fall. I served as a tutor at the middle school level during my college years and have worked with High School students on History, English and ACT/SAT prep for the past year.I have also served in various other academically-related positions, including as a research assistant and library assistant.
I like to nurture my students without enabling them. I tend to ask my students pointed questions about the subject at hand to inspire critical thinking and push them to arrive at their own interpretation of the correct answer. I feel that this best prepares them for college-level work.

My comments on tutoring Math : I am extremely experienced teaching elementary through pre-algebra mathematics.

I have worked with children and teens all my life. I was a camp counselor at a YMCA camp for 6 summers in my teens and early 20s. I taught 5th grade my first year (class of 36 students!) and then taught 3rd grade for a year, 2nd grade for three years, and 4th grade for three years--all in public schools. Then I taught English at the middle school level for four years in a private school. After that I subbed and tutored for a year until I was hired to teach in a K-8 building at the 8th grade level. I taught there for nearly 20 years before I retired, teaching science, pre-algebra, and communication arts (English, reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, and spelling.) While in that position, I was the sponsor of the science fair, building-wide, for nearly ten years. Since retirement, I have subbed, tutored, have written and published a book, and am writing a daily blog.
