A Little Bit About Me...

I believe all children want to learn. Sometimes it takes some work to find the spark that ignites the learning process. Unfortunately, a larger classroom may not be the best environment to find that spark in some kids. I've been successful with both children and adults because I have a knack for finding out what motivates them. Once I know something about how a student thinks, I can better come up with concepts that will help her or him understand the subject.
I've been teaching since I was an 18-year-old Navy Hospital Corpsman in the 1970's. I tutored math, Biology and Chemistry during undergrad and med school and helped friends with the grammar for their research papers. To avoid mind-numbing repetition, I present the material with a combination of text and pictures, then review the material with ungraded short answer exercises ("active learning – I do and I understand"). Then we summarize. I also connect what the student is learning with previous course content to promote learning by association. I graduate May 2009 from Simmons College with a BS in Biochemistry. My courses taken during my undergraduate career were heavily focused in the sciences.
