I believe that students need to be challenged. When they are highly challenged, they really produce. In my tutoring experience, my students' test scores rose two grade levels in ten weeks because they were challenged. Previously, these students were thought to not be able to speak, read, or write English, and were pre-testing at very low grade levels. For the first three years out of the university, I was a school librarian, and was board certified K-12 by the Washington State Board of Education as a result of this experience. From 2006-2008, I have been tutoring writing at Northern New Mexico College, from 4th grade remedial level through college papers in all subjects. I am presently working in an Upward Bound program for 9th graders, to help increase their study skills.

I think tutoring students involves a lot of different techniques, considering students learn different ways. I found being patient is probably one of the most important parts of teaching. I worked with probably the hardest age group, freshmen. I learned that repetition was a great way to get them to learn. In math I would have them do the same type of problems with different numbers numerous times. This technique really worked and I was able to teach anybody. It made me feel good when students would tell me “thank you, I thought I would never learn that”. That gave me great self satisfaction knowing I made a difference in this person’s life.
