Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.
After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I believe that conversation is an essential part of language learning. After teaching some basic vocabulary and grammar, I like to encourage students to place their fear of making mistakes to the side and converse as much as they are able to in the target language. Depending on the age and experience of the student, I like to incorporate teaching materials such as books, worksheets, articles on the internet in the target language and listening exercises, as well as interpretation of song lyrics that the student might enjoy, describing art pieces in the target language and anything else that the student might find interesting.
