I tailor my teaching style to the student. I first evaluate where the student is by building rapport, discussing the problem he/she is having, talking to the teacher, and talking to the parents. I then begin focusing on the area where the student is having difficulties. It may be that the student requires help with homework as well as review of fundamentals. For a period of five years, I offered tutoring services to students at the University of Chapel Hill, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. My ability comes from experience...I was not entirely prepared for college when I started, and had to work much harder to successfully complete my degrees. I believe that this has given me a great insight into what students really need, especially as schools continue to do a less than perfect job of preparing students for the future.
The goal of my approach is to enable students to have a level of ownership in learning concepts and ideas. I have spent 4 years as a Spanish teacher and the past two years as a substitute teacher while working on my master's degree in Special Education. I have had many experiences with many different levels of learners both as a Spanish teacher and as a sub.
