Learning rules for spelling is not very productive tutoring. I give strategies to children for beginning readers using phonics. I believe in assessments to determine a childs strengths and weaknesses. I would want to have previous class work and homework assignments and determine deficiencies in a given area. Due to my background in early childhood, I teach using hands-on manipulative based strategies. Before I began my professional teaching career, I worked for the Read Across America program helping young learners gain an appreciation for reading.
