A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in Sociology. Almost immediately I went to work in the behavioral health field. While there, I found an ability to connect with, and build a rapport with the residents at the facility. After a year, I took a position as a Clinical Counselor at the Medical University of South Carolina, working with emotionally disabled adolescents and putting together "groups" or behavioral classes in the hospital. I have taken and passed PRAXIS examinations in the field of Special Education, and am now a highly qualified Special Education teacher. I have taught Special Education in three Counties, and absolutely love teaching.

I enjoy teaching very much. My style is based on discovery method. I use a series of questions and hints to help the student probe the mind to find the answer that the student may already know. Learning needs to be fun and exciting and I try to make learning fun. I want the student to be excited and have a sense of accomplishment that the student has learned a lesson well when the lesson is finished. I love to be in the classroom. I love the process of learning. It is important to understand that children learn at different paces and in different ways. It is important for us as instructors to recognize this dynamic. A Little Bit About Me...

Since I acquired language using primarily the conversational method, that is my basic approach to teaching. Of course there are the basics of grammar and syntax, style and such, all of which are necessary, but if you cannot open your mouth and produce an intelligible phrase, then what good is it to acquire another language? I approach this method through dialogue with my pupil - the Aristotelian method, if you will. I ask the questions, they provide the responses and I correct them on the points of grammar that are applicable to the extent situation. This, I believe, frames the lesson in a practical application, as opposed to mere rote memorization. It's the method that worked for me, so I believe in it and I use it.
