My comments on tutoring Life Science : I hold a Ph.D in a Life Science discipline.

I took a variety of Biology classes and Labs at WPI mostly focused on Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics. I recently finished my PH.D. where I studied control of viral gene expression. This work encompassed a variety of biological disciplines including virology, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and molecular genetics, all of which I am quite experienced in. I also have experience teaching in a seminar format as well as in small groups. As a senior graduate student I was responsible for leading discussions prior to invited speaker seminars.
I believe that stimulating conversation and allowing people to arrive at answers on their own and through experience is the best way to form lasting connections.

My style is dependent on the student. While the end result is having a student understand the material, the way of achieving this varies with each person. Some students require a lot of hand holding while some require a more hands off approach. To achieve understanding I will cater to the students needs.
I have tutored high school students who are college bound during my undergraduate years at William Paterson University of New Jersey. I also tutored my fellow undergraduates. I then pursued a doctorate and was active in many peer study groups where were tutored each other in neuroscience and organic chemistry. My approach to teaching is to show my students how learning is relevant to their lives because students will more fully engage in their education if they believe there is significance to what they are learning. I like to question students about what is important and interesting to them, and then relate the course material to these issues through diverse activities that tap into a wide range of talents (writing, drawing, speaking, etc.). I believe students benefit from repeated exposure to the same ideas in various forms. Every student is capable of learning; it is my role as teacher to discover how best to teach each individual student and guide them to reach their potential as a learner.
My focuses as an educator have been in the sciences and in the education of disadvantaged youth. While completing a graduate degree in natural resources at the University of Connecticut, I wor ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I developed a patient style of simply allowing a student to set his own pace yet make sure he lives up to his own promises. Making lasting commetments allowes the student to take controle of his own improvement, yet allows me to see what he need direction in. In showing the student alternative practices, he will see the benifit in changing his ways for the better.

A Little Bit About Me...

Math can be fun, especially when applied to exciting applications. For my work at NASA and the MITRE Corporation I use concepts from Calculus I-II almost everyday. Inspiring students to become excited about math and science is one of my life-long goals. Step by step visual diagrams can be effective tools for describing complex ideas. From my experience as a teacher and student I have had great success creating simple graphics to accompany otherwise dense math equations for circuits, data structures and statistics. This teaching style coupled with a fresh knowledge of math material as a graduating senior make me confident that I can be an asset to your team this summer. I will be returning to my home in Connecticut May 18th and would welcome the opportunity to and discuss starting work at Advanced Learners!

Currently, I work at a learning center, where I tutor students at a 3:1 ratio in beginning reading, academic reading, math, and writing. I also tutor a 2nd grade dyslexic student once a week, and a 3rd and 5th grade student in math. I am very passionate about tutoring and love seeing the difference I make in each student's life.
I have been extremely fortunate the last couple years to gain a lot of teaching experience through substituting and student teaching, as well as tutoring. I feel like my experiences have been well rounded, working with all grade levels, different subjects, and special education students. I am very patient and try to do whatever I can to help each of the students I work with.

My primary activities during my professional career have been teaching and counseling. My experience covers clients across the lifespan: from infants in early care and education through grand- parents in post-secondary education and college courses. I have taught and tutored the basics: reading, writing, composition, comprehension, fluency, basic mathmatical functions, etc. I have also taught major required and elective courses in the field of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
As the "Summary of Experience" paragraph describes, I enjoy teaching people of all ages. I suppose my first love is working with young learners: seeing the "aha!" spark that shines when a child first absorbs a concept or masters a skill that is new, or one which has previously proved difficult. My teaching style could be described as "eclectic", in that I draw from the many resources available to find a "l ... read more

When I did my first student teaching in the 4th grade I succeeded in teaching the children all subjects. I also taught one Spanish girl how to read English and learn her math. My second term of student teaching was in the 3rd grade. Again I succeeded in teaching all subjects to my students. All my students were involved in learning. My greatest year of teaching was at Saint Joseph School. I taught middle school English from 5th grade through 8th grade. All my students were very busy learning their English lessons. Also durning that assignment I taught my home room 6th graders Religion, Health, Reading and life.
I used all learning styles. I taught and they wrote. We had group assignments and presentations. All students increased their English scores. They all succeeded in their learning. I loved teaching and made sure that they all had a wonderful learning experience. ... read more
