I am a graduate of Virginia Tech with a BS in Biology with a concentration in microbiology. I also have minors in leadership and Chemistry. Therefore my understanding of the sciences and basic mathematics is quite extensive. For two years in school I tutored in mainly Chemistry but I also tutored in Chemistry applied mathematics such as statistics, geometry and algebra. I also was an EMT for five years and as part of my duties I mentored the new EMTs. I also, as a senior EMT member, hosted many Girl Scout and Boy Scout events. I am a firm believer that the science subjects are not as difficult as many students are afraid they are. In my past tutoring experiences I like to allow the student to explain to me in their terms their understanding of the subject. I then fill in the gaps or revise their understanding. As a college graduate, I have been educated on a wide variety of topics which I achieved high academic excellence. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in communication disorders and psychology. These subjects have allowed me to gain knowledge about the basic maths and sciences as well as about people. Moreover, through my college experience, I have extremely sufficient grammatical skills due to the numerous research papers I have written. Since high school, I have mentored 4th and 5th grade students in reading and math, taught Girl Scouts life skills, and assisted many peers in studying the areas of communication disorders and psychology. I believe that a big part of teaching is listening and observing. Not every student learns the same way, so it is important to be patient and try to understand what works best for the student. In many cases, examples are helpful in learning. Examples that are tailored to a specific student (e.g. drawing correlations to cooking for measurements, or sports for averages) can be a great basis for understanding concepts. I have done classroom teaching and one-on-one teaching. I prefer the one-on-one approach because it is so effective, and so satisfying for myself and the student when progress is made. I am a very patient teacher and meet students on their level, speak and relate to them with respect and love---and teach them according to their needs and skill levels. If a student is difficult to work with, I will not hesitate to steer off the subject path for a few minutes to discuss something that interests them--this gains their respect and creates a bond with the student--then I steer us back to the subject at hand.
