A Little Bit About Me...

I will receive my bachelors degree in mathematics from Purdue University in May 2012; however I began my college career in math education so I have taken many methods/teaching courses. In the past I have done short-term tutoring for algebra/pre-algebra, geometry, high school calculus (calc 1), and algebra II. I have also tutored in English as a second language, specifically for native Spanish speakers.
I specifically enjoy helping with homework or test prep, where the student has specific problems to work through. Otherwise, I can explain basic concepts and give practice problems to work through. I really like to work through a lot of examples because without practice it can be difficult to apply.

While attending Danville Area Community College from 2003 to 2005, I tutored middle school and high school students through a program called AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). This included individual and group tutoring sessions in all subjects. I mostly tutored in mathematics as this is my specialty. After transferring to Eastern Illinois University, I began my pursuit of a teaching certificate in secondary education with my concentration in mathematics. While at EIU, I had many experiences teaching in a classroom setting. I also occasionally tutored high school and college students in both physics and math. Throughout my tutoring experience, I noticed oftentimes, students wouldn’t be able completely grasp the concepts the first time when I explained to them. To resolve this problem, I have learned that it is helpful to explain the process of solving the same problem from a different perspective or using a different method.
