I will receive my bachelors degree in mathematics from Purdue University in May 2012; however I began my college career in math education so I have taken many methods/teaching courses. In the past I have done short-term tutoring for algebra/pre-algebra, geometry, high school calculus (calc 1), and algebra II. I have also tutored in English as a second language, specifically for native Spanish speakers.

Every student is different. They all have different experiences and learning styles. Sometimes teachers can just try to explain concepts and ideas the way that they understand things. I like to first ask students questions to help me understand where they are, what they specifically do and do not understand. This helps me to figure out how to help the student. Also in my experience, teachers teach only one method of solving a specific problem and that way may not be easy for that student. To resolve this problem, I have learned that it is helpful to explain the process of solving the same problem from a different perspective or using a different method.
