As a mother of two young children, I want to see all children exceed. Children learn through positive reinforcement and by slowly building confidence, as his or her work improves. Childen should not be made to feel inferior, but need approriate teachings to fit his or her personalities. All it takes is a little confidence to start off with, keep encouraging and praising, and this can be achieved when the tutor works with the child based on his individual strength to learn. Each child is different, and building rapport with the student and having him or her undersand we have all been tutored in some area of school- it doesn't make you 'less smart', but rather smarter. I enjoy working with students of all ages, although most of my experience has been with middle school age and older. I use a couple of different techniques to help students understand math, including using visual aides, problem solving techniques, role reversal (where they explain a lesson to me), blackboard/whiteboard work, and games. I believe it's really the responsibility of the tutor to understand the student's learning style and adjust the teaching to fit the learning style.
I have tutored students in math and science (mainly math) for over 13 years. I have helped students in various levels of mathematics - basic math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus. I earned both of my degrees while working and caring for very young children. I feel this was possible because of my time management skills and determination to see a task through to completion. I have worked in the accounting or banking industry for over thirty years and truly love working with numbers. I fell in love with accounting in high school, finishing the semester project in about a month and a half and never looked back. I worked in accounting for one year as accounts receivable manager for one of the fastest growing companies in Mississippi. I also performed all accounting tasks for my own business for 3 years. I then went back to school in 2008 and finished my accounting degree at Delta State University in Cleveland Mississippi. I have tutored students in accounting and computer courses for the last year and even though I have moved to Birmingham I am still contacted by students in Mississippi through word of mouth.
I break down subjects to the most basic level and build from there. A Little Bit About Me...

Admittedly, I have no direct (structured) teaching experience. However, I have nearly five years of experience in the journalism field, and during that time I've mentored a number of fledgling college and high school journalists. And while journalism and political science are my two specialties -- given that I have degrees in both -- I also have a fair amount of expertise in the tangential fields of English and History.
I do not have a particular teaching style because I don't believe that a single method works for everyone. Therefore, I operate from an Occam's Razor perspective -- whatever is the simplest solution is the best. I believe I am very empathetic and perceptive, which would enable me to determine what works best for each student.
