Bringing Out The Potential In Students...

My method of tutoring is to work with students where they are and add to their skills, to accomplish the final outcome, preferably an "A" or "B." Some students are visual learners and some are informational learners, or some students combine the two. The potential I see in students is what I try to bring out and have them realize they are capable of going a step further, to reach their goal. My teaching style is very interactive. I like to begin a tutoring session by helping the student set a goal for the session. We then begin work on the material. During the session I encourage the student's learning by asking open-ended questions to encourage critical thinking. With writing assignments, the pen is always in the student's hand and, with guidance, the student makes choices about his or her writing. I use a method I call guided discovery, which encourages students to think in depth about their subject, discovering new methods and information with guidance from me.

As a graduate student from Central Michigan University I have learned several different methods to use when tutor students. Knowing that all students do not learn the same way or at the same speed I use several different programs/methods when tutoring a student. With younger studengts I use a combination of work books and computer lessons along with small homework assignments. With older students I use programs such as writing small reports at first while slowly building them up to larger yet easy to grasp essays.
