I began teaching at a very young age. I began my own music lesson company which taught basic level of piano, guitar, saxophone and voice lessons out of my house before I began high school. After achieving my certificate of proficiency in Spanish from Hamline I then began to also privately tutor Spanish. I also have earned my TEFL/TESOL certificate and will eventually go abroad and teach English overseas.
I have worked mainly with children, but enjoy teaching all ages. I tend to take a systematic approach and keep my lessons structured. I like to have students keep some sort of record of their practice time, as well as their progress. I also am a strong believer in making learning fun, so I try to listen to my students' needs and pay attention to their learning styles so I can create activities that they will not only find educational but fun as well.

I have a BA in English and a Master's and Ph.D. in German (Germanic Linguistics). I have taught English literature as a substitute in junior and senior high schools, college level German, linguistics, English reading and writing and English as a Second language. I have taught and tutored children and adult learners. My teaching experience has been in Germany, California and Minnesota. I also tutored ACT/SAT in Minnesota.
I enjoy teaching students of all ages, individually or in groups. I find the Socratic method most useful, and with children this translates into making the subject (i.e. German grammar) seem like a puzzle that, with some effort, can be solved. I think students are best served when they can discover these answers for themselves.

A Little Bit About Me...

I feel it is very important for the student to feel relaxed and confident when they are with me. To this end, I always give a few minutes of each lesson to personal contact, and chat with them a little about what is happening in their lives. I also encourage laughter and light-heartedness. I stress that it is OK to make mistakes. If they are having trouble grasping a concept I tell them it is because I have not explained it correctly and ask them to bear with me until I get it right. I use a lot of encouragement and praise, but also insist on keeping high standards. I want them to feel good about themselves when they leave me.

I am an accountant by occupation, and my tutoring experience is primarily as a volunteer, because I love learning and helping others to learn. I gave beginning piano and music theory instruction to a student who went on to become a professional flutist. I also taught beginning piano and music theory lessons to my neighbor's son, who went on to learn violin and recently guest conducted at his high school orchestra concert.
