I recently received my Bachelors Degree from the University of Michigan, where I studied English and Spanish. I chose a rigorous course schedule which allowed me to greatly develop my writing, editing, proofreading, and critical thinking skills. During my sophomore year of college, I began to facilitate creative writing workshops with youth and adults. I graduated from Saginaw Valley State University with a degree in Secondary Education and am certified in the State of Michigan to teach 6-12th grade English and math. Along with completing student teaching, I have substitute taught in various districts as well as tutored homeschool students. I volunteer at my church as a Sunday School teacher, and during college I participated as a conversation partner in the English as a Second Language program.

One of the key motivators for learning is the link between theoretical math or science topics and everyday problems that a student can solve using these skills. For example, to help a geometry student understand the significance of the area of a prizm, I asked him to consider how much paint he needs to buy if he wants to re-paint his room. A max/min calculus solution can help select the minimum fence length to create the largest yard for a dog. I also try to approach teaching the same concept from several different angles. Each student will have their own process of internalizing a specific concept and it's just a matter of finding the right path to get him or her to understand. After high school, I recognized in myself a desire to work with elementary- and high school-aged children. I have always been at the top of my classes and was heading for an engineering school before I discovered a love for helping kids.
