In my disciplines, the value of understanding totally outweighs rote memorization and learning of “recipes” for solving problems. I believe students understand new concepts in terms of their previous experience and background. I attempt to link previous experience to new experience and promote meaningful learning. I have had extensive and varied work experience in both field and laboratory-based biology: I have worked as both an environmental and zoological researcher, and in the fields of genetics, microbiology and botany. My bachelor's degree in biology has focused primarily on organismal and environmental sciences, but I am well-versed in a suite of other subjects, not only among the life sciences.
